Upgrading your laptop’s memory (RAM) is one of the fastest ways to boost its speed, especially if you love keeping 50 tabs open at once. In this quick guide, we’re breaking down the exact step-by-step process to safely install new memory without breaking a sweat or your laptop.
Step-by-Step Installation
Before You Start: Make sure you bought the right RAM type (like DDR4 or DDR5) and speed that matches your specific laptop model. You'll also need a small Phillips-head screwdriver and a clean, flat surface to work on.
Power Down and Unplug: Shut down your laptop completely (don't just put it to sleep). Unplug the charger, and if your laptop has a removable battery, take it out.
Discharge Static Electricity: Touch a metal object (like a doorknob or a metal table leg) before touching the insides of your laptop. This prevents static electricity from damaging the delicate circuits.
Open the Back Panel: Flip your laptop over. Use your screwdriver to carefully remove the screws holding the bottom cover in place. Keep the screws in a safe spot so they don’t roll away! Gently pop the cover off.
Locate the RAM Slots: Look for small, rectangular modules. If you're replacing old RAM, push the tiny metal clips on the sides outward. The old RAM stick will pop up at an angle, and you can gently slide it out.
Insert the New RAM: Hold your new RAM stick by its edges (try not to touch the gold pins). Line up the notch on the stick with the ridge in the slot. Push it in at a 45-degree angle, then gently press down until the side clips click into place.
Close It Up: Put the bottom cover back on, screw everything back in tightly, and power up your laptop!
